The Magic of Tilt Shift Lenses

The Magic of Tilt Shift Lenses

I’ve been considering purchasing a tilt shift lens for quite some time, mainly because I’ve grown tired of the distortion caused by my wide angle lenses when shooting subjects like buildings, or really, anything. The price has kept me away, which is why I decided to rent one from Borrow Lenses a few weeks ago [...]

Union Grove Farm

Near the small town of Union Grove, IL is this old farm with classic red buildings. It made for a nice photo prop on a warm summer evening as the sun set and a few clouds rolled in. Be sure to join me on Facebook – Twitter – Flickr

Calamus, IA 52729

I’ve decided to break out a bit from being so Central Illinois-centric with the Post Office project. To get back in the swing of things, here is the rural post office in Calamus, IA, Zip Code 52729. Calamus is a town of about 450 people west of Clinton right along historic US 30. Be sure [...]

Peoria Riverfront Museum Project Progress

Working in downtown Peoria has given me the opportunity to watch and photograph the work being done on the Peoria Riverfront Museum as it progresses towards completion. It has been quite amazing to watch as what began as a giant hole in the ground early this winter has taken shape in to what will become [...]

Cameron, IL 61423

With all the recent news regarding the closings of post offices around the country due to extreme budget shortfalls, I figured it was time to start posting a few more of my Post Office series to the blog again. Many of the post offices whose photo I’ve already posted to the blog are on the [...]

Cattle Farm, Raritan, IL.

Finally getting back to blogging! For my first post here in a while, I guess I’ll go back to the well of “In the (Three Oh Nine)” photos. This one is from earlier this winter, from one of my post office-seeking photo trips. I found this scene just north of Raritan, IL.

Yates City, IL 61572

With the recent news that the United States Postal Service is going to close up to 2,000 post office locations around the country, in mostly rural areas, I decided that I needed to begin documenting the small town and rural post office locations around my area. Beginning last week, I drove the countryside in search [...]

Vintage Motels Part 2

For part 2 of the Vintage Motels series, I figured I’d share a few interior photos of the various old motel rooms I’ve stayed in recently. Once again, these are from the Point Motel in Stevens Point, WI or the Motel Centralia in Centralia, IL. Here we are: This week I’ll also start a new [...]

Vintage Motels

In recent months, I’ve had the opportunity to spend the night in some interesting vintage motels around the Midwest. The first such occasion was at the Point Motel in Stevens Point, WI. It would’ve been a great, affordable place to stay if not for the lack of hot water in the room. My most recent vintage motel stay was in Centralia, IL at the Motel Centralia…

Perspective Correction in Photoshop

Perspective Correction in Photoshop

One thing I’ve really become obsessed with lately is correcting the perspective of my images in Photoshop, especially for architectural images. My primary wide-angle lens is the Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5. It’s a fine lens with great optics, but it does give quite a bit of distortion, which is especially noticeable when you are dealing with the straight lines of a building. So I thought I’d throw together a little tutorial on how I manage some of that distortion, and come up with something corrected, almost like you’d see from a professional architectural tilt/shift lens. You can follow along below:

Architectural and Real Estate Photography

I believe that well done real estate photos can be an invaluable tool when selling your home. Quality photos, done by a professional who has the talent, equipment and time to do the job right can lead to more interest in your home, and even a higher selling price. I also like to photograph new [...]

The Driskill, Austin, TX.

Sixth Street is the place to go in Austin, and one of the anchors of this famous street is The Driskill Hotel. The hotel is a classic structure, built in 1886 by a cattle baron in what was then a wild west town. The hotel has a rather long history, including being lost by its [...]

An Abandoned Highway

Built in the early Eighties to connect the giant steel mills in East Chicago, IN with the Indiana Toll Road, the Cline Avenue Freeway curves through the heavy industry and rises high over the Indiana Harbor Canal. The road has a grim history. In 1982, during its construction, a large section of cribbing collapsed during [...]

US 30 Suspension Bridge

From my ongoing Mississippi River project, this is the relatively new (built in 1999) suspension bridge over the Mississippi River at Clinton, IA. As always, join me on Facebook : Twitter : Flickr

Under the Skyway

An hour or so after official sunset, the sky in the west still glows, accenting a few clouds moving in off of Lake Michigan, just to the north. The Chicago Skyway bridge rises high above us, getting way up and over the Calumet River to allow uninterrupted boat traffic below. The Norfolk Southern’s lift bridge [...]

Landmark Bridges

On Chicago’s southwest side, in the McKinley Park neighborhood, stands historic bridges built by the Scherzer Rolling Lift Bridge Company for the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1901. The spans were designated an official Chicago Landmark by Mayor Daley on December 12th, 2007. The exotic design of these bridges is very unique, with two spans lifting to [...]
